The website asks the question:
Why make it free?

Because I approve of free software and hope that the availability of good products on a good operating system will encourage people not to use proprietary systems.
Because programming is a lot more fun than marketing and giving things away is easier than selling them.
Because I’d have to spend more time doing QA if I sold it.
FontForge, is a full-featured font editor which supports all common font formats. Developed primarily by George Williams until 2012

FontForge is free software.

Free Type

Dave Crossland is a typographer and open software advocate. He a lead a workshop with us on free type and open software- Fontforge. He started by asking us to draw the letters 'n', 'o' and 'a' with no further instructions. When we had all finished the class put their work at the front and we all compared our styles. Dave was interested to see our techniques but then told us we had done it wrong. The correct way to create a font should always be, area, outline, fill. We then tried again using his techniques which turned out far better and more refined. He taught us about 'C.R.A.P.' contrast, repetition, alignment, proportion. We shortly moved onto a short tutorial on how to use Fontforge, which was rather tricky to get neat shapes which with practise i hope to get the hang of.
