We approached the brief knowing that we had to collect as much data as we possibly could in the allocated time. We discussed our surroundings and questioned the most interesting forms of data around us. We analysed the man made objects around us and sectioned off areas within 50 steps that we could cover. Questioning what the size of a “step” actually is?

After discussing the brief we sectioned off into pairs and on our own to collect different types of data. Sophie took pictures of shop signs and fonts along the road, Beth collected rubbish and recorded sound of the cars, Jen recorded how many buses there were and fonts, and took a lot of photos of the area, Josh recorded the amount of people that crossed the road, James tallied windows and doors and i tallied car colours, cigarettes, gum and then we all tallied the amount of tiles on one side of the road. These were the things we found most interesting. As a team we made sure that we were constantly communicating, so that we could keep on top of the task.

From all of the data that we collected, we found that the rubbish we collected was the most prominent and interesting.
So from this we analysed the data that we had collected and tried to deduce what sort of person had been hanging around the area. Analysing the types of food/ drink /shops etc that were in the situated area. From this we tallied and presented the rubbish that we had collected, by hanging it off an umbrella (the umbrella represents the area). This created and interactive and exciting display of data.
We deduced it was most likely to be a student, perhaps male (due to the amount of beer cans that we found)

I collected various types of data from the area such as gum and cigarettes but the data i had the most results from was when i recorded car colours in the space of a three minute period. This meant i didn't actually take any steps to collect my data. I just recorded the data that moved along in front of me. I wouldnt say that this led me to have any opinion about the type of area we were in.
The data i have compiled here is the data we ended up with as a collective group. We decided to focus primarily on litter that was within the 50 steps of the area. This lead us to think about the type of people who may live/hang out in the area. From assessing the litter and seeing the types of food packaging/alcoholic bottle/cigarettes we came to the conclusion that it was the student type.
